What are IP66 Enclosure Characteristics:

With competitive price and timely delivery, SATA IPC sincerely hope to be your supplier and partner.

  • Complete protection from dust, oil, and other non-corrosive material
  • Complete protection from contact with enclosed equipment
  • Protection from water, up to water projected by a nozzle against enclosure from any direction
  • Able to protect against powerful water jets
  • Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) against the enclosure from any direction shall have no harmful effects.
  • Test duration: at least 3 minutes; Water volume: 100 litres per minute; Pressure: 100 kPa at distance of 3 m

It is often confusing for an engineer to know what type of rating they require when they're looking for a “waterproof” touchscreen solution.  Much like with watches and other electronics, there is a big difference between waterproof, water resistant, and other descriptive, but not specific,
labels.  To help out, there are several rating systems that have been developed and several testing agencies that verify the results. Among these, the two best known are NEMA and IP. We will cover the IP system here.

Quick Summary of the Main Differences Between IP65, IP66, and IP67 Touchscreens

Depending on your project, the differences between these three ratings can be very important. A touchcreen solution rated with any of the three of these ratings is equally protected against dust, dirt, sand, and debris (as indicated by the “6” digit). The liquid/water protection for each of these three ratings is unique.

  • IP65 – Water resistant
  • IP66 – Water resistant against powerful jets
  • IP67 – Protected against complete temporary water submersion

Which IP Rated Touchscreen Solution Do I Need?

The answer to this question ultimately depends on the environment in which the touchscreen unit will be installed. If the rugged touchscreen LCD monitor will be subjected to dust, sand, debris, or liquids, choosing a fixture with a higher IP rating is advised.

To decide which IP rating is suitable for your project, examine the space where the touchscreen solution will be placed. Typically, low IP ratings are used for areas such as indoor settings where jetting water will never be an issue. Temperature controlled areas like office buildings and municipal buildings would not require high IP ratings.

High-IP-rated LCD touchscreen monitor solutions have been used for outdoor locations subjected to a greater amounts of liquids, dust and direct sunlight and have been installed in areas such as a large footfall staduims, marine grade vehicles, and unsealed locations exposed to the elements, such as sports arenas, beachfront areas, and dirty warehouses and industrial factories.

What is an IP Rating?

IP rating is also known as Ingress Protection or International Protection ratings which are defined by the international standard of EN (British BS EN :). This standard is used to define the effectiveness of sealing electrical enclosures against intrusion from foreign bodies such as tools, dirt and moisture.

What do the two digits in an IP Rating mean?

The rating consists of the letters IP followed by two digits; if a number is replaced by X, this indicates that the enclosure is not rated for that specification.

IP66   =  First Digit - Solids

The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure provides against hazardous parts (electrical conductors, moving parts, etc.) and the ingress of solid foreign objects.

IP66   =  Second Digit - Liquids

The second digit defines the protection of the equipment inside the enclosure against various forms of high pressure moisture (drips, sprays, submersion etc).

What is the difference between IP65, IP66, IP67, IP68 & IP69K?

The differences between commonly sold IP65, IP67, IP68 & IP69K certified display solutions from Xenarc Technologies are slight, but very important. Using the above chart as a guide, we can see that all of these touchscreen and LCD monitor solutions are protected at the highest level from solids and dust. The variations come with the protection against liquids.

IP65 = Water resistant. “Protected against water jets from any angle” *Do NOT submerge IP65 touchscreens and LCD Monitors, as these are not waterproof.

IP67 = Water Proof. “Protected against the events of temporary/long term submersion (10 minutes or more)”*You can submerge IP67 displays for extended periods; our IP67 rated touchscreen and LCD monitor solutions can be submerged and come with IP67 rated power chords and connectors.

IP68 = Waterproof. “Protected against the events of permanent submersion up to 3 meters”

IP69K = The highest rating one could possibly achieve is IP69K. This superior IP rating suggests complete protection from dust and protection from steam-jet cleaning (water temperatures of -22F (-30C) to 158F (70C)). Some regulations, including IEC , refer to the testing of IP69K as IPx9.

What IP Rating Will You Need?

If you don’t anticipate a harsh environment that is extremely dusty or wet then a lower IP rating would suffice.

Applications that involve a lot of dust, debris, or potential to be in contact with any solids or liquids, you’ll want to make sure that the IP ratings are higher and that you have adequate water resistance on the touchscreen or LCD monitor solutions you utilize.

Examples of IP Ratings and Uses

Low IP ratings are appropriate for:

- Indoor use

- Protected use inside sealed products

- Inside sealed signage

- When using aluminum extrusions

High IP ratings are appropriate for:

- Unsealed outdoor locations

- Places that have a lot of debris

- Areas with heavy foot traffic

- High splash areas

- High contact areas (people touching them)

- Wet locations
